A more open dialogue at Queens would greatly help the situation surrounding plagiarism in our community. Having expectations explained and out in the open would allow for students and professors to understand each other better. Many students complain that professors do not make any sense. Creating a space for dialogue on expectations in terms of citations and plagiarism.
There is also the idea of creating a mandatory workshop or session for all students to attend at some point on citing so that unintentional errors can be avoided. A workshop or session like this could also be used to deter students from intentionally copying the work of others.
An interesting idea for a penalty would be for students who are found in violation of the Honor Code based on plagiarism to give a presentation at a local school or after school program on plagiarism and why it is important to not copy and to give others credit for their words and work.
